Funeral Services and Mass of Christian Burial for Roland A. “Rolaid” Speer, 54, of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. on Monday, August 25, 2008, at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home. A prayer service will be offered at 2 p.m. on Sunday to begin visitation. Roland died Thursday August 21, 2008, at Genesis Medical Center, West Rusholme, after a sudden illness. Roland Arthur Speer was born August 13, 1954, in Davenport, the son of Merle and Andorothy (Scott) Speer. Roland graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1972 and Blackhawk College, Moline. He was united in marriage to Carol J. Owens July 16, 1988, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport. Roland was a self-employed construction contractor and property manager. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Roland was a very devote family man and loved spending time with his children and going on family camping and fishing trips. He especially enjoyed his newly acquired quarry and farmland. Memorials may be made to the Speer family. Survivors include his wife, Carol of Davenport; daughters, Essie Meek, Moline and Jessica Speer, Tipton, Iowa; sons, Josh Speer and Ray Lackey both of Davenport; a granddaughter, Madisyn Mueting; sisters, Tina Anderson, LeClaire, Iowa, Maureen (Ken) Trafton, Davenport, Mary (Dan) Schulte, Des Moines, Andorothy Kilby, Davenport and Karen (Ira) Lathan, Aurora, Ill.; brothers, Michael (Mary Louise) Speer, Bettendorf, Richard (Joan) Speer, Natchitoches, La., William (Deb) Speer, Princeton, Iowa, Bob (Sandy) Speer, Davenport and Joe (Pam) Speer Davenport; numerous nieces and nephews; and the Karwath and Speer family cousins; mother-in-law, Kathryn Owens, Davenport; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Terry and Larry Vogt and Dicky and Pam Owens, all of Davenport; and lifetime friends, John Corsiglia and Tommy Cummings. Roland was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Catherine Blount, a brother Andrew Speer and a nephew Andrew Speer. May they rest in peace.
